Oxidation is a chemical approach that turns silver into appearing black. It oxidizes the surface of the silver object, which means that below the surface, the metal remains bright. By using and rubbing the item, the oxidation comes out, especially on surfaces which are in touch with skin or clothes. Gradually, the brightness of the silver comes through and gives the effect of patina to the object. Re-oxidation of the object is an easy process at any jewelry workshop.
At the last phases of production, sterling silver 925º is a live metal with a matte finish. Sterling silver gets oxidized when in contact with air, water, perspiration, alcohol, chemical ingredients in perfumes, creams, lotions, detergents etc. At the first stages of use, a sterling silver object might get oxidized by one of the above reasons. Yet, it can easily be polished with silver polishing liquids for home use, easily found at any supermarket. Polished silver eventually becomes shinier, as its surface becomes smoother by rubbing. The more one wears silver, the brighter it becomes, as the pores of the metal close and less oxidation occurs.
Brass and copper, as solid metals, are also sensitive to oxidation. They can get oxidized when in contact with air, water, perspiration, alcohol, chemical ingredients in perfume, cream, lotion, detergents, etc. Especially rings which come directly in contact with the skin can leave a greenish stain on the finger, which is easily cleaned by washing one’s hands. Brass and copper oxidation results in changing their color into a darker and brownish shade. This effect can be cleared by using a brass polishing liquid for home use, easily found at any supermarket. After polishing, brass and copper become shinier than before, as the surface becomes smoother by rubbing. The more one wears brass and copper, the brighter they become, as the pores of the metal close and less oxidation may occur.
Gold-plated silver or black platinum-plated silver is a silver object coated with gold or black platinum-plate that changes the color of the silver into gold or shiny black. This type of plating can fade with use and rubbing, yet in a slower pace than oxidation. Re-plating the object is possible at any workshop that deals with gold or platinum metallization.
